linocut

school project

Ljubljana, 2013

This linocut was created as a quick project for "Presentation techniques 3". Our task was introduced by Zora Stančič, the artist from Slovenia. We had to design a mural for a part of the city. A mural should send some kind of "message" to the people or even society, and it should represent the chosen part of the city - it's history, atmosphere, character. We were allowed to create it either with our hands or digital tools.

I wanted my message to apply to the over-working people, and the way they lose their personality when caught up in work. The suggested location for the mural is the main train station in Ljubljana, where most of the people come to work in the early morning and leave for home in the late evening or even at night.

My design was created using the technique Zora Stančič uses the most in her works -  linocut.

The idea was to create two people, facing each other, realizing they are the same, feeling like they are literally looking themselves in the mirror. The only difference is, that one wears a tie and the other a bowtie. Also, they lost their faces. To emphasize the feeling of sameness, I quoted famous Slovenian poet Janez Menart: "Are you really me? Am I really you?" ("Si ti res jaz? Sem jaz res ti?")
