office building dalmatinova

school project

Ljubljana, 2012

The location of this project is small patch of land in the very city centre of Ljubljana. We had to design an office building with library, post office, a store and a coffee shop.

The basic idea was to design as big volume as possible, and to leave free space around, just to allow pedestrians pass past the nearest buildings. Normally this would never work due to the sun-lighting issue, but because the neighbouring buildings do not require sunlight (service program), this solution was suitable.

As a consequence, the office building is formally an anonymus volume on the outside. But on the inside, the volume disintegrates, the floors are perforated, which creates a huge skylight in the middle. This serves also as an interaction hub between the floors. It is a focal point of the building.
Rigid on the outside, flexible on the inside.

The ground floor - with library, post office, a shop and a coffee shop - is meant to be public. That way we give the city and it's people back at least a portion of what we took away when designing "the biggest possible volume" in this area.
